Understanding & Betting The Point Spreads

imagesIf you’re betting NFL lines this season, you have to familiarize yourself with the concept of the point spread, and if you do, you should be laughing all the way to the bank.

Spread betting is a type of internet sporting bets in which players wager on a team to beat another team by x amount of points, or players can bet on whether a team can lose by less points than the spread indicates, or outright. For example:

If Indianapolis is favored by six points over New England, then a player can bet on the Colts to win by seven points. It has to be by more than six, or it’s called a push, which means the player loses the play. On the other hand, you can bet on the Patriots to lose by less than six points, or they can win outright. In either scenario, the player wins the bet, but if the Patriots lose by six points or more, the player loses the bet.

The spread can be a handful to bet on, and nothing can make you angrier than watching a team miss a late field goal that would have covered the spread for you. It’s good to look at websites that keep track of a team’s ATS (Against The Spread) statistics to check out trends (for example, Cincinnati was 0-7 as a favorite last year, but 7-2 as an ATS underdog). Study up the spread betting trends, and you’ll be on your way to many sports betting wins in your sportsbook.
